Candaulism is a sexual practice or fantasy in which a man exposes his partner, or images of her, to other people for their voyeuristic pleasure. The term is derived from a story told by Herodotus, the ancient Greek historian. In the story, King Candaules of Lydia boasts of his wife's beauty to his favorite bodyguard, Gyges, and then asks him to hide and watch her undress.
The practice of candaulism has been around for centuries. Historically, it was most commonly associated with kings who took pleasure in having their wives observed by other men, though it doesn’t necessarily have to involve a person of royal status. The term has also been used to describe scenarios involving exhibitionism or voyeurism, such as when a couple has sex in a public place with the knowledge that others are watching them.
